Is Homeopathy Effective?

Homeopathy was developed 200 years ago as alternative medicine by the German doctor Samuel Hahnemann.

Homeopathy

Introduction

It has 3 main foundational principles:

  • Similarity law: When a healthy subject is administered substance derived from animal, vegetable, or mineral origin, certain symptoms are produced. When a sick subject with the same symptoms is administered the derivatives of animal, vegetable, or mineral origin in submolecular doses as homoeopathic remedies, they have a curative effect.
  • Individualized treatment: Homeopathic treatment is done on the basis of the description of the symptoms as given by the patient. It should be kept in mind that the personality of every patient is unique and the perception of the same symptom may vary.
  • Minimal dose law: Since undiluted doses of substances derived from animal, vegetable, or mineral origin are toxic for a patient, infinitesimal doses of these substances are used. The effectiveness and potency of the substances is directly proportional to the level of dilution.1

Benefits

Here is a list of benefits of homeopathy:
  • Galphimia glauca, a homeopathic remedy, is used to treat allergic rhinitis.2
  • Arsenicum album is a remedy used for intoxications and allergies.3
  • Arsenicum album has also been prescribed for chronic hepatic disorders.3
  • Helleborus niger is used to treat patients with low states of vitality or some serious disease.3
  • Traumeel may have effects on relieving pain in adults due to cancer.4

Scientific Research

Homeopathy should not be mixed up with other types of complementary therapy like herbal medicine, which is based on herbal preparations. These do contain some active principles.1

Homoeopathic remedies have been tested in very few clinical trials. However, there is no explanation as to how the much diluted solutions, administered only orally, can be effective on a molecular level. It has not been clarified, either, how these diluted solutions act on biological tissue. Since there has not been a condition for which a positive or negative effect could be proven objectively, it can be concluded that all homeopathic remedies are placebos.1

There are conflicting reports in the scientific publications as well. Some papers suggest that homeopathy encourages quick relief from symptoms of disease in acute illnesses at a much lower risk than conventional medicines. The evidence-based advantages of homeopathy include:

  • Lower rates of antibiotic fill during the watchful waiting period of otitis media
  • Lesser side effects and less severity of side effects
  • No drug-drug interactions5

Mode of Action

Classical allopathic medication is used for preventing, diagnosing, or treating disorders, whereas homeopathic remedies are exclusively devoted to treating symptoms without considering the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying that disease. Thus, the same homeopathic treatment is offered for vomiting, regardless of its cause, which could be due to motion sickness or chemotherapy.1

There are 4 types of homeopathic treatment:

  • Classical or individualized homeopathy: A single homeopathic remedy is chosen based on the total symptoms exhibited by the patient. It involves extensive consultations which itself might have effects, at least for subjective outcomes. The apparent positive effects of classical homeopathy are difficult to distinguish from the effects of longer consultations and other “context effects.”
  • Clinical homeopathy: One or many single remedies are administered to a patient for standard clinical situations or conventional diagnoses. It is delivered in the same way as conventional drugs are prescribed. It does not require long-drawn and comprehensive homeopathic case-taking.
  • Complex homeopathy: Multiple remedies are mixed into a standard formula to encompass a person’s symptoms and diagnoses. It does not require long-drawn and comprehensive homeopathic case-taking.
  • Isopathy: Serial agitated dilutions are made from the causative agent in an infectious or toxicological condition.2
Clinical homeopathy, isopathy, and complex homeopathy are relatively more cost-effective and are feasible in countries with limited resources. In clinical homeopathy and complex homeopathy, the intervention is associated with the disease state and is not individualized for each patient.2

Side Effects

The basic principles of homeopathy are quite different from the scientific fundamentals of current and modern medicine. Thus, they have been considered farfetched. Since they lack a proven mechanism of action, homeopathic remedies have been gradually rejected due to the amazing progress in chemistry, medicine, and pharmacy in the last 200 years. In November 2009, the Science and Technology Committee of Great Britain declared that homeopathy was “useless, unethical, and unreliable.”1

Before being released into the market, a medicine which is intended to cure a disease requires approval from superior institutions of drug control. Many years of research and a lot of financial effort is required by financial companies in order to meet the high homologation standards. If the adverse effects are found to be more than the therapeutic benefits, the certifications may be withdrawn. However, there are no such regulations for homeopathic remedies to check their therapeutic effects. Since the substances used for treatment are highly diluted, they are thought to have no biological effect.1

World Human Organization has prohibited the use of homeopathic remedies for severe diseases like HIV, malaria, tuberculosis, and severe diarrheic symptoms in children.1
